Feng Shui

By Shari, feng shui consultant

Feng Shui (pronounced fung schway) is the ancient Chinese art of placement; balancing possessions to enhance positive energy and productivity in the room. Managers use feng shui to stimulate productivity in employees and enhance their wealth and relationships. Try it!

Feng Shui is about creating comfortable environments that are supportive to people. People are adopting Feng Shui today because they are finding a greater need for comfort in our fast-paced and often chaotic world. The home should be the place to reenergize yourself. When a home has had Feng Shui principles applied, it can be a source of strength to the occupants. When a leasing office has had proper Feng Shui principles applied, it can be a place where prospects feel invited and welcome.

Quick Leasing Office Fixes
-In leasing offices, feng shui can both increase sales and reduce money delays and business costs. It can also increase the popularity or traffic of the office.
-Create a more welcoming environment that allows customers to feel relaxed and ready to buy. Your environment can be the difference between walking into a very dark and disorienting office (or model) and walking into a warm, light, and organized home. One is forbidding and the other is inviting.
-Pay attention to the key locations including the entrance, the location of the leasing consultant's desk, and the area that is used to complete the sale. These should be located in beneficial areas that favor the people and/or the money (see Ba Gua in Rent & Retain Spring issue, page 26).

Quick Fixes For Your Office
Make small changes in your environment to unblock and enhance your chi (energy/cosmic breath).

-Clear the clutter. A cluttered environment leads to confusion and lack of focus. Everything should have a home. Those long-stored items and papers require "subconscious maintenance" and steal energy.
-Hang a photograph of a waterfall on the north wall to help you relax and meet your quota/bottom-line/sales goals. This helps lead to a promotion.
-Sitting with your back to the door can evoke a subtle yet constant sense of vulnerability. Move your chair/desk to the power position so you face the door. If that's not possible, add a mirror to the wall in front of you to give you a view of the door from your desk.
-Same principle applies to prospects - make sure they don't sit with their backs to the door. They should be comfortable during our sales process.
-Stuck for a new idea? A small fan moving the leaves of a plant in a windowless room can help.
-If your office is in a dim or out-of-the-way location, add lights to the entrance, perhaps in the hall outside your door.
-If your work space shares a wall with a storage area or rest room, add a fabric wall hanging to create a better boundary. Pretty sheets also work well. Check out the color bagua (see Ba Gua in Rent & Retain Spring issue, page 26) - add colored fabric that corresponds with each area (e.g. Put red or green fabric in the wealth area).
-Chi will get stuck if there is clutter in your space, especially near the entrance. Sort and throw out what you can. Moving your stuff around doesn't do the trick. Clutter is your #1 enemy and energy drainer.

Quick Fixes For Your Home
-Check the flow of energy. If your front door opens opposite a door/window your money is coming in and going out. Place a Half Moon and Sun on the door/window opposite the front door to keep the "Chi" in the home. A small mirror can also be placed on the window frame facing the front door reflecting the energy back into the home.
-Along the same lines, if you have neighbors close by with bad chi, put mirrors in your windows facing out -- that reflects their bad chi back at them. If you live in an apartment on a top floor, put a mirror under your couch or bed facing down. This will also reflect bad chi back at them.
-Clear drains and repair leaky faucets. If your drains are slow and your faucets are leaking, your energy or money will either be stopped up or lost. Get them fixed. Also, keep lids of toilets closed and unused drains shut.
-Replace burned out lighting and make sure all electrical elements are working. Burned out lights delete your energy. If your electrical outlets are overloaded, so are you. If you electrical box has blown a fuse, you probably will blow one, too! Get them all fixed.
-Check for cutting arrows. Sharp objects and corners are cutting arrows that deplete energy. Protruding corners and edges from walls, fireplace hearths, dressers, etc. will cut your electromagnetic field causing you to lose energy. These are especially common in bedrooms and living rooms. The color red will protect you from cutting arrows and hold these energy fields in place. Place red dots on these corners to cure this, or use fabric to cover the sharp edges.
-A red lamp in your kitchen (or in the model) is a symbolic fire element. This will add warmth to the room.
-Fountains or waterfalls in your wealth area are always helpful.
-Plants enhance the environment and bring in good chi, especially if you inhabit an interior space. If you can't bring in plants (or if you don't have a green thumb) hang pictures of nature and plants instead.

To Clarify
Black Sect-trained FS consultants typically use the Ba Gua, an octagonal chart that depicts key areas in your life in relation to one another. At work, you would set the bottom of the chart at the entrance to your office or top of your desk to identify and then improve the physical areas that influence your success.
