Proper Disposal Of The American Flag

The American Legion or VFW may accepts flags that are no longer fit to fly. According to the United State Flag Code 36s 176 (k): “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” But the burning must be conducted by an approved flag disposal organization.

I looked in the phone book for our Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, called the phone number, and asked if they would take my flag. The response: “Absolutely!” So many people do this that when I went to drop off the flag, there was a bag by the front door with other flags in it already.

Easy, respectful, and the right thing to do. Check out your American flag right now to make sure it is in good shape. If not, please dispose of it properly.
