Quick Redesign Tips for Senior Homes

Suggested Modifications:
(also referred to as universal design features)
wider doorways
wider hallways
grab bars in the bathroom
zero-clearance entrances (so wheelchairs or ride-on carts do not get held up on the lip
higher electrical outlets
lever faucet handles and shower water turn on/off
lower bathroom counters
lower kitchen shelving
lower kitchen counters
doorbell that also flashes lights
upgraded lighting throughout the house
-too plush carpet is hard to walk on with a cane or move on in a wheelchair
-greater color contrasts between floors and cabinets, and one room to the next, to make it easier for failing eyes to see.
